Free UPSC Mains answer writing practice: build the full loop
A useful practice system needs questions, time limits, diagnosis and the next correction. All four can begin for free. Paid evaluation becomes valuable only when it gives specific feedback your current loop cannot produce.
Choose one official question from a topic you revised. Decode its directive and clauses, plan for two minutes, write without notes, score demand fulfilment, structure, evidence, analysis and expression, then rewrite the weakest section. Log one error that tomorrow’s question must retest.

Primary question source
Use official papers for real question wording and marks context. UPSC does not publish the editorial self-evaluation framework used here.
The 35-minute deliberate-practice unit
Question selection — 2 minutes
Choose a question from a topic revised within the last week. At the beginner stage, the goal is to practise expression and reasoning, not to test an uncovered syllabus.
Demand decoding — 2 minutes
Circle the directive, split multiple clauses, identify the topic boundary and decide whether a judgement is required.
Skeleton — 2 minutes
Write only headings, sequence and two strong pieces of evidence. A detailed plan steals writing time.
Timed attempt — 8 or 11 minutes
Use the mark and word context shown in the paper. Finish the answer; an elegant first half cannot compensate for an ignored clause.
Evaluation — 8 minutes
Mark evidence in the answer for each judgement. “Weak” is not a diagnosis; “second clause receives one unsupported sentence” is.
Focused rewrite — 10 minutes
Rewrite only the weakest introduction, body section, example set or conclusion. This converts feedback into a changed action.
Use a five-dimension self-evaluation
| Dimension | Check | Next drill if weak |
|---|---|---|
| Demand | Every clause and directive is visibly answered | Write only outlines for multi-clause PYQs |
| Structure | Sequence helps the evaluator follow the argument | Practise headings and paragraph purpose |
| Evidence | Claims use relevant examples, data, law or cases | Build a verified topic evidence bank |
| Analysis | Answer connects causes, effects, tensions and judgement | Add stakeholder and counter-view grids |
| Expression | Language is precise, readable and within limits | Shorten sentences and remove repeated framing |
Do not pretend the total is an official UPSC mark. The score is a private tracking device: it helps you notice whether the same weakness is recurring.
A four-week free plan
- Week 1: three familiar-topic answers; focus on demand and completion.
- Week 2: five answers; rotate two GS papers and track evidence.
- Week 3: five answers plus two timed pairs; focus on switching and pace.
- Week 4: one mixed mini-test, then rewrite the three most repeated weaknesses.
At week-end, count corrected errors rather than written answers. Volume should rise only when feedback still changes the next attempt.
When paid feedback may be worth it
Consider external evaluation when you cannot explain a plateau, your self-scores are inconsistent, you need paper-level comparison or the same diagnosis persists despite multiple rewrites. Ask for a full sample first. Good feedback points to the exact line or omission, explains why it matters and gives a drill for the next answer.
Write one answer now
Select a question, attempt it before seeing any framework, then turn the diagnosis into one focused rewrite.
