The examination does not test the news. It tests the syllabus, using the news as raw material. A scheme announced this month is examinable because it attaches to Governance or Social Justice, not because it was announced; the same is true of a treaty, a rate decision, or a satellite launch. This is why every brief in this archive carries a syllabus tag rather than a topic label — the tag is the reason the item is here at all.
The practical consequence is that an item with no syllabus attachment is not worth your time however prominent it was. Most of a day's headlines fall into that category. Selecting against prominence is the whole job, and it is why a curated brief is shorter than the newspaper it came from.
Prelims and Mains ask for different things from the same event
Prelims asks whether you can identify something: the body that issued it, the year, the ministry, which of four statements about it is correct. That is a recall test, and negative marking of one-third of a question's marks means a half-remembered fact is worse than an absent one. Mains asks what the event means — the argument, the trade-off, the comparison with what came before. The same story therefore has to be stored twice, once as a fact and once as a position.
The briefs here are written with both in view: the factual spine sits at the top, the "why it matters" line underneath is the Mains material, and the MCQ sprint tests only the first of the two. Where the news sits in the syllabus is mapped in detail in the UPSC current affairs syllabus guide.
How much to cover, and for how long
The two questions every candidate asks about this section are how many months back to go and how to stop the reading from expanding without limit. Both have answers that depend on which stage you are sitting and how far out you are, and both are worked through separately rather than guessed at here — see how many months of current affairs to cover and how to understand current affairs without memorising the news.
What can be said generally is that consistency beats volume by a wide margin, and that the candidates who struggle here are almost never the ones who read too little. Fifteen minutes a day sustained for a year produces a usable base. Four hours a day for three weeks in the run-up produces anxiety.
Why every item names its source
Current affairs is the one part of preparation where second-hand summaries circulate freely and errors propagate quietly — a misremembered figure or a scheme attributed to the wrong ministry can survive months of revision unchallenged. Every brief in this archive names the publication it came from so that any claim can be checked against the original rather than trusted because it appeared here. Where we get something wrong, it is corrected and recorded under the corrections policy.
This also matters for the answer you eventually write. A statement you can source is a statement you can defend in a Mains answer or an interview; one you absorbed without attribution is a liability in both.
Using this archive
Work forward from the oldest entry you have not covered rather than starting from today, so the sequence stays unbroken. Take the MCQ sprint before re-reading the brief, not after — the point is to find out what did not stick, and reading first hides that. Anything you miss twice belongs in your own notes, tagged to the same subject as the brief. The method behind the daily format is described in the daily current affairs guide, and the underlying subject tree is at the UPSC syllabus.
