How to choose an optional subject for UPSC: shortlist, test, decide
Optional selection becomes easier when you replace hearsay with a small experiment. You do not need certainty about the whole subject; you need comparative evidence that one option fits better than the alternatives.
Shortlist three subjects from background and genuine interest. Give each the same trial: official syllabus, recent papers, one representative topic, one revision and two answers. Decide with recorded evidence, not topper frequency.
Build the shortlist
Include your graduation subject if relevant, one subject that strongly interests you and one that appears feasible from an initial syllabus/PYQ scan. Exclude subjects only after inspecting the official material.
Use a weighted matrix
Score comprehension, sustained interest, source access, feedback access, answer fit and time requirement. Give extra weight to your real constraint—for example, feedback access for a technical subject or source stability for self-study.
Test the difficult middle
Do not trial only the most attractive introductory chapter. Choose a representative topic from the middle of the syllabus. The test should reveal routine workload, not produce a motivational high.
Set a decision deadline
After a fair comparison, choose and begin. Repeatedly reopening the decision consumes the time that would reduce actual uncertainty through study, revision and answer practice.
