How to improve UPSC Mains answers after evaluation

The score is the least important part of evaluation. Improvement comes from locating the costliest weakness, changing the answer on paper and testing the same skill on a different PYQ.

The improvement rule

Read the evidence under the lowest dimension, verify the diagnosis, rewrite that failure and schedule a different PYQ that demands the same skill. Compare like with like across several attempts; do not chase one estimated mark.

Fix weaknesses in the right order

5	Weak evidence or conclusion	Replace a generic claim and close by answering the directive, not by repeating the introduction.

Relevance comes first because every later strength depends on answering the actual task.

Official basis and editorial boundary

The 2026 UPSC notice describes the Main Examination as conventional essay-type papers and says credit is given for orderly, effective and exact expression with economy of words. It also warns that illegible handwriting can attract a deduction and that superficial knowledge does not earn marks. UPSC does not publish a public question-by-question scoring rubric for candidates.

A seven-day improvement loop

Day 1: baseline

Write one timed answer and record all five dimension scores.

Day 2: repair

Rewrite the lowest dimension and verify any new evidence.

Day 3: transfer

Attempt a different PYQ requiring the same skill.

Day 7: retest

Repeat under time and compare the dimension, not only the total.

Track trends without turning practice scores into predictions

Compare answers with similar marks, word limits and difficulty. Use a rolling set of five attempts and ask: Which dimension is consistently lowest? Is the evaluator citing the same observable problem? Did the problem remain under time?

A rising practice score can still hide a repeated directive error if the questions became easier. A flat total can hide meaningful progress when one dimension improved while you attempted harder questions. Keep the original answer, the evaluation and the rewrite together.

When to seek a human review

The AI repeatedly misreads the question or your handwriting.
Your diagrams, spatial presentation or full-paper strategy matter to the diagnosis.
A factual or ethical nuance remains disputed after primary-source checking.
Dimension scores improve in practice but timed paper performance does not.

Start with relevance and directive if it is weak. A well-presented answer cannot recover from answering the wrong task.

How quickly should practice scores improve?

There is no reliable universal rate. Track dimension trends across comparable questions rather than expecting every new score to rise.

Can I submit the same answer again after editing?

Yes, but a changed answer creates a new evaluation. An exact duplicate is served from saved history without another charge.
