How to evaluate a handwritten UPSC Mains answer online
A handwritten evaluation is useful only when the answer is captured clearly and the transcription is checked. GENIE AI separates extraction from evaluation so you can correct reading errors before using your evaluation allowance.
Use a flat, well-lit scan or photo. Keep the complete page inside the frame, avoid shadows across lines and combine a multi-page answer into one PDF. After extraction, compare every heading, number, quotation and technical term with the original before evaluation.
Supported files and limits
| File | Limit | Shared allowance use |
|---|---|---|
| PNG image | One clear answer page; maximum 5 MB | One upload evaluation |
| One-page PDF | Maximum 5 MB | One upload evaluation |
| Two-to-four-page PDF | Maximum four pages and 5 MB | One multi-page evaluation |
Encrypted, damaged or empty PDFs are rejected. A very small or extremely large PNG may also be rejected because it cannot be read safely. Type the answer instead if a usable scan is not available.
Official basis and editorial boundary
The 2026 UPSC notice describes the Main Examination as conventional essay-type papers and says credit is given for orderly, effective and exact expression with economy of words. It also warns that illegible handwriting can attract a deduction and that superficial knowledge does not earn marks. UPSC does not publish a public question-by-question scoring rubric for candidates.

Prepare the answer in five steps
Write the question identifier
Keep the answer tied to the exact PYQ selected in the app. Evaluation without the correct directive and marks is unreliable.
Flatten and light the page
Use even daylight or a scanning app. Avoid fingers, page curves, patterned backgrounds and hard shadows over the writing.
Preserve the writing area
Capture every heading, arrow, side note and final line. Cropping a conclusion can make a balanced answer appear incomplete.
Upload once and review the transcript
Correct names, article numbers, case names, statistics and any “[unclear]” text. Evaluation uses the reviewed transcript rather than guessing from the original file.
Evaluate and rewrite
Use the feedback to rewrite the weakest section on paper. A cleaner scan alone does not improve answer quality; the next written attempt must change.
What handwriting evaluation can and cannot see
GENIE AI can help with
- transcribing legible English, Hindi or mixed-language text;
- flagging partial or unreadable transcription;
- checking the extracted answer against the PYQ and directive;
- finding content, structure, evidence and analysis gaps;
- saving feedback for later review.
Keep human review for
- fine handwriting aesthetics and evaluator effort;
- diagram accuracy, scale and visual communication;
- page-space use, margins, underlining and spatial presentation;
- official mark or rank prediction.
Privacy and charging
The original PNG or PDF is sent for transcription and is not stored by UPSC Genie. The extracted text is shown for your correction. If you proceed, the text and structured evaluation are saved in your account history. Extraction alone does not use your allowance, and failed evaluation usage is restored automatically.
If the answer contains private information unrelated to the examination, remove it before uploading. Do not include identity documents, phone numbers or other personal records on an answer sheet.
Upload a handwritten Mains answer
Select a Mains PYQ first, then choose “Upload PNG / PDF” and verify the detected text before evaluation.
