How to analyse UPSC Prelims PYQs properly

Analysis is not highlighting the correct answer. It is identifying why you chose an option, what evidence would have changed the decision and exactly what should enter the next revision cycle.

The short answer

Attempt first, freeze your reasoning, classify the result, audit every option, verify the narrow concept, write one revision action and reattempt later. The unit of analysis is the decision process—not the answer-key letter.

The four error types

Knowledge gap
Did not know

A core concept or fact required by the syllabus is missing.

Recall gap
Knew but lost

The material was studied but could not be retrieved accurately.

Reasoning error
Bad inference

The evidence was available, but an option was interpreted poorly.

Attempt error
Risk mismatch

The question should have been left or attempted under your own rule.

Use only one primary error label per question. If everything is labelled, the log stops being useful.

Primary sources used

Paper structure and penalty rules are checked against UPSC material. Practice explanations and strategy recommendations are UPSC Genie editorial guidance, not instructions issued by UPSC.

The seven-step analysis method

1

Attempt blind

Do not read the explanation first. Record your option, confidence and any elimination used.

2

Freeze the reason

Write one line explaining the choice before checking. This prevents hindsight from rewriting your memory.

3

Classify the result

Use knowledge, recall, reasoning or attempt error. A correct low-confidence guess is still an attempt signal.

4

Audit every option

Identify the exact word, exception, pair or scope boundary that makes each option safe or unsafe.

5

Verify narrowly

Return to one relevant lesson section or official source. Avoid opening five new resources for a single fact.

6

Create one revision action

Add a distinction, a short flash prompt, a map location or a lesson revisit—not a paragraph copied from the explanation.

7

Reattempt after seven days

Hide the old key and explain the options again. If only the letter is remembered, the error is not fixed.

What not to do

Practise, review and reattempt

UPSC Genie gives instant scoring and explanations after the attempt. Use subject mode for diagnosis and year mode when you are ready to simulate a paper.

Frequently asked questions

Should I analyse questions I answered correctly?
Yes. A correct guess and a correct evidence-based answer require different follow-up. Review the reasoning, not only the score.
How long should PYQ analysis take?
During subject learning, review can take longer than the attempt. During exam-mode practice, aim for a focused error review rather than researching every option without limit.
Should I make notes from every PYQ?
No. Record only reusable distinctions, recurring traps, core concept gaps and facts that belong in your existing revision system.
Can I analyse PYQs before finishing the syllabus?
Yes. Use small subject-wise sets after each learning block. Full year-wise papers are more valuable after a reasonable base is complete.
