UPSC CSAT PYQs: topic-wise and year-wise practice
Use 1,120 questions from 14 UPSC CSAT papers to build qualifying reliability—not just familiarity. Practise comprehension, reasoning and numeracy separately, then combine them under time pressure.
Take one diagnostic set across comprehension, reasoning and numeracy. Find the section where time or accuracy breaks, practise that section in short sets, and return to complete timed papers every week.
What the CSAT bank contains
The app lets you practise by year or by CSAT topic. Six 2013 decision-making questions for which UPSC accepted more than one option remain visible in the archive but do not appear in scored sets. This protects score accuracy while preserving the paper record.
The source field points to the UPSC previous-question-paper archive. Answer explanations are editorial learning support and should be used to understand a method, not memorised as official commentary.
Understand the qualifying target
The current UPSC notice describes General Studies Paper II as qualifying, with a minimum qualifying mark of 33 per cent. A qualifying paper can still eliminate a candidate, so preparation should aim for a repeatable safety margin rather than a one-off borderline score.
| Stage | Practice format | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic | 20 mixed PYQs without preparation | Record accuracy and time by topic |
| Repair | 10-question topic sets | Review method after every error |
| Integration | 20–40 mixed questions | Choose order and skipping rules |
| Simulation | One complete paper in two hours | Track attempted, correct, wrong and time left |
Source and editorial boundary
Question wording and year labels are checked against official UPSC papers. Subject mapping, explanations and practice strategy are editorial learning aids.
Practise the three scoring areas differently
Prove every answer from the passage
Separate the author’s claim from your general knowledge. For inference questions, choose only what the passage supports.
Externalise the conditions
Convert seating, statements, directions and arrangements into a diagram or symbol set before testing options.
Recognise the shortest method
Train ratios, percentages, averages, number properties, time-work and data interpretation with estimation checks.
Protect time and accuracy
Attempt strengths first, mark long questions for review and leave enough time to revisit uncertain calculations.
A four-pass PYQ review
Attempt without help
Set a time cap and record the option before viewing the answer.
Classify the failure
Mark concept gap, misread condition, calculation error, slow method or poor option elimination.
Write the reusable method
Keep one line that would solve the same question type next time. Do not copy the whole explanation.
Reattempt after a gap
Return after seven days in a mixed set. The test is whether you can retrieve the method without a topic label.
Build a weekly CSAT routine
Use two short repair sessions and one mixed session each week. Candidates with a weak quantitative base should add a fourth fundamentals session, while strong candidates should still complete regular full papers to test concentration and selection under time pressure.
Weekly error log
Question and year: identify the paper. Error type: concept, reading, calculation, method or time. Correction: state the smallest reusable rule. Retest date: schedule a mixed reattempt. Result: note whether both accuracy and speed improved.
Do not calculate confidence from one easy set. Use several years and include passages, puzzles and calculations in every later-stage simulation.
Start with a ten-question CSAT set
Choose a topic to repair one weakness, or choose a year to test mixed-paper decisions. Answers and explanations appear after each attempt.
