UPSC exam pattern, stage by stage
Three stages, eleven Mains-cycle papers, one number that decides your rank: 2025. Most pattern mistakes — over-preparing Prelims marks that never count, ignoring CSAT, discovering the language papers late — come from not internalising this table early.
Prelims: two objective papers on one day — GS Paper I (200 marks, decides screening) and CSAT (200 marks, qualifying at 33%); one-third negative marking on both. Mains: nine written papers — two qualifying language papers, then Essay, GS I–IV and two Optional papers at 250 each, totalling 1750. Interview adds 275. Final merit = Mains + Interview = 2025 marks. Prelims marks never enter the ranking.
Stage 1 — Prelims: the screen
| Paper | Marks · Questions | Rule that matters |
|---|---|---|
| GS Paper I | 200 marks · 100 questions · 2 hours | Its score alone decides the Prelims cutoff |
| CSAT Paper II | 200 marks · 80 questions · 2 hours | Qualifying only — 33% (≈66.67 marks) |
Both papers deduct one-third of the question's marks per wrong answer, which is why an attempt strategy matters as much as knowledge — our negative-marking guide covers the decision rules. And do not let CSAT's "qualifying" label breed neglect: every cycle, well-prepared aspirants exit the exam on Paper II. A few timed CSAT PYQ sets tell you early whether you need real work there.
For the next cycle, per UPSC's Calendar 2027 (as on 20 May 2026), the CSE 2027 notice is due on 13 January 2027 with applications closing on 2 February 2027, Prelims is on Sunday 23 May 2027, and Mains begins on 20 August 2027 and runs five days. Treat these as tentative: the calendar says its dates are liable to alteration, and the 2026 notice was issued on 4 February 2026, three weeks after the 14 January date in Calendar 2026.

Paper structure, marks, timing and penalty rules are checked against UPSC's Civil Services Examination 2026 notice (Examination Notice No. 05/2026-CSE, dated 4 February 2026) and the Commission's examination FAQ. Question counts are checked against the official 2026 Prelims papers. Strategy commentary is UPSC Genie editorial guidance.

Stage 2 — Mains: where the rank is built
| Paper | Marks | Counts in merit? |
|---|---|---|
| Paper A — Indian language | 300 | No — qualifying at 25% |
| Paper B — English | 300 | No — qualifying at 25% |
| Essay | 250 | Yes |
| GS-I · GS-II · GS-III · GS-IV | 250 each | Yes — see the GS-1, GS-2, GS-3 and GS-4 syllabi |
| Optional Paper I & II | 250 each | Yes |
| Mains merit total | 1750 | — |
Every merit paper is descriptive and three hours long — which is why answer writing is a skill you build during preparation, not a formality after it. The language papers are genuinely easy for most candidates but non-negotiable: a miss invalidates the entire attempt's Mains. Only Paper A has an exemption: it is not compulsory for candidates from Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim, or for candidates with a benchmark hearing impairment whom their education board or university exempted from second- or third-language courses.
In 2026 UPSC spread the nine papers over two weekends: Essay and GS I–IV on 21–23 August, then Paper A and Paper B on 29 August and the two Optional papers on 30 August, each in a three-hour morning or afternoon session (UPSC's Mains 2026 time table).
Stage 3 — Interview, and the final arithmetic
The Personality Test carries 275 marks, taken at UPSC's Delhi campus by a board that has your Detailed Application Form in front of it. Final merit = 1750 + 275 = 2025 marks. Two consequences worth internalising early: a strong Essay or Optional performance moves your rank as much as an entire GS paper, and the gap between the last selected rank and a miss is routinely under 20 marks — roughly one rewritten answer.
What the pattern means for preparation
- Prelims is a threshold, not a target — clearing it with margin matters; topping it earns nothing.
- CSAT gets a timed diagnostic in month one, not month eleven.
- Answer writing starts alongside GS reading, because 1750 of 2025 marks are written.
- The Optional deserves a deliberate choice — 500 merit marks ride on it.
- Every study decision maps to a paper in the tables above; if it maps to none, drop it.
