Economics UPSC Prelims PYQs: understand the mechanism
Economy PYQs become easier when you can trace who pays, who receives, which balance sheet changes and what happens to incentives, prices, liquidity or risk.
The validated bank maps 267 official questions primarily to Economy. Major mapped areas include money, banking and monetary policy; finance and markets; trade and the external sector; agriculture; public finance; services; infrastructure and industry.
The mechanism test for every option
For an economic statement, write a small arrow chain: policy or event → first balance-sheet or incentive change → behaviour → likely outcome. Then ask what assumption could break the chain.
A policy changes the cost of bank funds
Do not jump straight to “inflation rises” or “credit falls”. Ask whether banks pass the cost through, whether loan demand is sensitive, how liquidity conditions interact and over what time period the effect can appear.
Organise the PYQs into six systems
| System | Core questions |
|---|---|
| Money and banking | Who creates money, what changes liquidity and how does policy transmit? |
| Public finance | Who taxes or spends, how is the deficit financed and what is on or off budget? |
| External sector | Which flow enters the current or capital account, and what affects the exchange rate? |
| Markets and regulation | Which instrument represents ownership, debt, risk transfer or a claim? |
| Agriculture | How do price, procurement, credit, risk and supply-chain incentives interact? |
| Growth and development | Does an indicator measure production, distribution, welfare or capability? |
Source and editorial boundary
Question wording and year labels should be checked against the official UPSC papers. Subject and topic mapping, explanations and the study workflow are UPSC Genie editorial aids.
Common Economy option traps
- Confusing a stock with a flow, such as wealth with income.
- Treating an enabling power as a guaranteed outcome.
- Reversing the direction between price, yield, interest rate or currency value.
- Mixing the purpose of a regulator, bank, fund or market instrument.
- Assuming a measure affects every sector and household identically.
Maintain a one-page “direction sheet” for relationships you repeatedly reverse. Add a condition beside each arrow so the note remains economically accurate.
Use data carefully
Prelims rarely rewards a pile of changing numbers. Prioritise definitions, institutional roles and directional relationships. When a number matters, record its date and source. For current developments, connect the headline back to the static mechanism before attempting related questions.
Complete the first pass subject-wise, then use the subject dashboard to compare high-confidence errors across Economy and other areas.
