History UPSC Prelims PYQs: chronology, sources and themes
History PYQs test much more than isolated dates. They ask you to distinguish institutions, cultural forms, textual or archaeological evidence, sequences and the character of movements.
The validated bank maps 277 official questions to History: 109 Modern History, 104 Art & Culture, 37 Ancient History and 28 Medieval History under the current primary classification.
Use a different frame for each History block
| Block | Best organising frame | Frequent error |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient | Period · source · polity · economy · society · religion | Projecting a later feature into an earlier period |
| Medieval | Dynasty · administration · agrarian relations · culture · region | Mixing institutions with similar names |
| Modern | Chronology · organisation · demand · method · response · outcome | Confusing sequence or the position of a leader/group |
| Art & Culture | Form · feature · period · region · patronage · purpose | Attaching a correct feature to the wrong tradition |
A source-sensitive PYQ method
- Identify whether the claim is based on a text, inscription, archaeology, traveller account or later interpretation.
- Place it in a broad period before testing the detail.
- Check whether the statement changes region, patron, material, language or purpose.
- For movements, separate objective, social base, method and immediate outcome.
- Write the corrected pair in your error log, not an entire chapter summary.
This method is useful because many options contain a familiar fact attached to the wrong period or context. Recognition alone is therefore dangerous.
Source and editorial boundary
Question wording and year labels should be checked against the official UPSC papers. Subject and topic mapping, explanations and the study workflow are UPSC Genie editorial aids.
Build three compact revision tools
Place major movements, laws, organisations and cultural periods in sequence.
Compare architecture, literature, religion or administration across periods.
Connect a person to organisation, idea, event and time without writing a biography.
Each entry should repair an error you actually made. A growing notebook copied from a source is less useful than a small set of distinctions tested through PYQs.
A one-week History PYQ rotation
Spend two days on Modern History, one on Ancient, one on Art & Culture, one on Medieval, then take a mixed set and use the final day for delayed reattempts. Adjust the allocation after the baseline: a smaller section may need more time if your error rate is high.
Use subject-wise analysis to compare factual gaps with elimination errors. Later, use full year papers so History is practised among Economy, Geography and Science rather than in isolation.
Practise History PYQs by subject
Attempt a mixed-period set, label the source or sequence behind each option and save only the distinctions you need to repair.
