Science and Technology UPSC Prelims PYQs: concepts before jargon

Science and Technology questions often begin with a current application but are solved through a basic principle, a careful definition or a realistic understanding of what the technology can do.

The validated bank maps 207 official questions primarily to Science and Technology. Its largest mapped areas include biotechnology, emerging technologies, life sciences and foundational science, followed by ICT, defence, space and energy technologies.

Use a four-box technology note

BoxWhat to writeWhat it prevents
PrincipleThe basic mechanism in one plain sentenceJargon without understanding
ApplicationWhat problem it can realistically addressOverstated claims
LimitTechnical, economic, safety or scale constraint“Can” becoming “will always”
ContextRelevant mission, regulator, sector or ethical questionIsolated fact collection

Apply the same frame to gene editing, quantum technology, satellites, batteries or artificial intelligence. The vocabulary changes; the reasoning discipline remains stable.

Review every statement through capability and constraint

  1. Identify the object: organism, material, signal, platform or process.
  2. State what changes and what remains unchanged.
  3. Check whether the option confuses research potential with present deployment.
  4. Test scale: laboratory, pilot, commercial or universal.
  5. Look for category errors, such as treating a diagnostic tool as a treatment.

A technical statement often becomes wrong through one exaggerated word. Do not reject it because it sounds unfamiliar; translate it into a mechanism you can test.

Source and editorial boundary

Question wording and year labels should be checked against the official UPSC papers. Subject and topic mapping, explanations and the study workflow are UPSC Genie editorial aids.

UPSC previous question papers

Topic sequence for a first PYQ pass

Life science and biotech

Cells, genes, pathogens, immunity, diagnostics and agricultural applications.

Digital and emerging tech

Networks, computing, sensors, AI, quantum concepts and cyber basics.

Strategic technology

Space, defence, materials, energy systems and their civilian applications.

After each block, attempt a mixed set. UPSC can combine a technology with environment, health, agriculture, economy or governance, so final revision must cross subject boundaries.

Build an error glossary

When an option fails because two terms were confused, add the pair to a glossary: vector versus pathogen, encryption versus hashing, gene editing versus genetic modification, launch vehicle versus satellite, battery energy density versus power. Define each in one line and add one boundary.

Reattempt the question after a week without the explanation. If you can explain every option in ordinary language, the concept is more likely to transfer.

Practise Science and Technology PYQs

Start with a topic block, translate each statement into a mechanism and save the distinctions that defeated your first attempt.
